Important message from our CSSA President, AJ Scheetz
Dear Colleagues,
Oh Micron! I hope we have said goodbye to this variant and that we will not be dealing with any other variants in the future. Last month, the omicron variant was at the top of our thoughts, but hopefully it will be a distant memory soon. The fact that the omicron surge seems to be waning does not mean that it has not had a profound impact on us. If it has affected you or your family, I wish you the best. It has set the CSSA Board back a little and our last board meeting discussion centered around the best way to provide actionable professional learning to the membership. Faced with the choice of holding our next membership/dinner meeting on March 9th in the face of several setbacks to our planning or postponing our next meeting to May 18th, we opted for putting the meeting off. So, our next general membership/dinner meeting will be on May 18th at the Sheraton Hartford South location in Rocky Hill. Please mark your calendar.
One of the main goals that I set for myself this year was to grow our Board in a way that reflects the diversity of Connecticut’s schools. To this end, I am happy to announce that we have three new board members, Tracey Stockwell from Hamden Public Schools, Nicole Bay from Windham Public Schools and Justine Lasala from Fairfield Public Schools. Their contact information will be on our website soon. Please feel free to reach out to them if you have questions or input.
Next, we plan to award the Fred Scimone Outstanding Science Supervisor Award at our May 18th meeting. If you know someone who you think is deserving of such recognition, please contact Nicole Raccio at nraccio@southingtonschools.org. We actually have a backlog of awardees and we plan to honor three deserving science supervisors at the May 18th meeting. https://www.cssaonline.org/uploads/2/5/2/5/25256662/cssa_outstanding_supervisor.pdf
Finally, some more good news. Despite the fits and starts that have typified the last two years, CSSA membership is robust. We currently have more than seventy members who are up to date with their dues and another twenty to thirty people who are active members in their own way. Imagine if half of that large population chose to attend our next dinner meeting? Wouldn’t that be a great way to end the year, to reconnect with colleagues, and set the stage for the next year and the work we all do for the students of Connecticut?
All the best,
AJ

October 6th Virtual Meeting
Many thanks to Meg Hanly, Todd Campbell and Julie Christianson for sharing their work and insight, during our October 6th meeting, regarding social justice and equity in our CT Science classrooms. All three are great resources for CT educators. We are processing your feedback and CSSA will do what we can to help move this very important work forward. If you have questions or suggestions email us at cssa@cssaonline.org

This past Spring we held two virtual meetings to gather your input in response to the following question:
"In anticipation of students returning to school, what questions, concerns, and challenges would your school/district need to address prior to school opening regarding classroom-based science instruction and investigations?"
All responses were compiled and included in a letter to the CSDE for their action. The letter can be found here. We understand that everything about returning to the classroom has been changing but we are committed to supporting Science education in CT in any way that we can.

CT Conversations in Science:
Advancing Coherent and Equitable Systems of Science Education (ACESSE)
When and Where: Date and place to be scheduled soon
CT Conversations in Science: Advancing Coherent and Equitable Systems of Science Education (ACESSE) is a science educator led experience. It is an effort to advance the implementation of Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) for ALL teachers and students in Connecticut. It is FREE to all participants. On this day, teachers from participating districts will meet to engage in ‘ACESSE Resource G: Learning to See the Resources Students Bring to Sense-Making’ as we build our capacity to identify the range of intellectual resources students use as they make sense of phenomena.
