Science Teacher for Academy of Aerospace and Engineering
The Academy of Aerospace and Engineering at John Wallace Middle School offers seventh and eighth grade students learning experiences among various aerospace professions, from pilot to astronaut to aerospace engineer. The curriculum is rigorous, innovative, and relevant to today's world. It emphasizes project-based learning and problem-solving skills, and it will develop students' collaboration and critical thinking abilities. Students explore and research aerospace topics in depth, such as aeronautics, the aerospace environment, aerospace physiology, air navigation, and the physics and operation of space craft. The academy is designed for students who have a passion for science, math, and innovation, plus a strong interest in flight and space exploration.
The Academy of Aerospace and Engineering teacher is responsible for curricula development and instruction of the Newington Public School’s Aerospace Academy program. Under the direction of the Director of Extended Learning and support from the program leader and Office of Curriculum and Instruction, the ideal candidate will provide input into the design of the aerospace academy facility, will research and develop the academy curricula, will budget and purchase materials/resources, and will teach science and academy themed courses.
The ideal Academy of Aerospace and Engineering teacher candidate will possess strong knowledge and skills in backwards curriculum design, physics, mathematics, technology integration, the ability to support project-based learning in the classroom, the ability to build relationships with business partners, and an interest in developing science electives for students with strong science and mathematical foundations.
Successful candidates should be committed to meeting the needs of all students with varying backgrounds. Preference will be given to candidates with previous experience in such programming.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
The following statements of duties and responsibilities are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by individuals assigned to this position. Designs and implements the aerospace academy curriculum.
Identifies long and short-term individual student and class objectives, prepares and writes plans and student performance evaluations. Selects appropriate learning materials including texts, tests, supplements, audiovisual materials and other media.
Provides a safe environment for learning, follows academy program procedures, and maintains records in a timely fashion.
Develops and maintains classroom materials and displays.
Provides instruction to students using methods and activities which best meet predetermined objectives including using community resources when applicable and available.
Facilitates student growth in developmental, affective and cognitive domains by promoting student participation in the learning experience, promoting analytical thinking, teaching effective work habits and study skills and providing opportunities for individual achievement.
Applies appropriate diagnostic and assessment techniques and informs students and parents of the basis for assessment.
Periodically assesses student accomplishment of objectives and reviews assessment results with students and parents.
Develops and maintains industry partnerships to enhance learning experiences.
Participates in student placement team meetings and contributes to accomplishment of team goals.
Interacts with students, parents and other personnel to ensure accomplishment of educational goals.
REQUIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Experience/Requirement: Minimum of 5 years of successful teaching experience anda Connecticut Certificationin one of the following: Physics (032) and/or General Science (034). Master's degree preferred but not required.
